Built between 1927 and 1928, the United States Post Office–Newburyport Main is Newburyport's first purpose-built postal facility, designed by architects in the Office of the Supervising Architect under James A. Wetmore's direction. The single-story Georgian Revival structure is faced in red brick laid in running bond, with a projecting central section housing the lobby that features three round arches trimmed in marble, flanked by wings containing offices. The front elevation rises beneath a pitched hip roof, while the rear service area employs a flat roof. A. M. Lundberg of St. Louis served as contractor. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and is also part of the Newburyport Historic District, designated in 1984.
