The Upper State Street Historic District in New Haven, Connecticut preserves a well-maintained late-nineteenth-century commercial neighborhood in the East Rock area. Running irregularly along State Street between Bradley Street and the Mill River, the district developed rapidly after 1850 as the industrializing city expanded westward, achieving nearly complete development as a neighborhood commercial center by the 1890s to serve the residential areas along Orange Street and Whitney Avenue. The streetscape encompasses architecturally and functionally diverse buildings from this first phase of growth—including commercial structures, mixed-use commercial and residential blocks, light industrial buildings, and churches—many of which retain original storefront features. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, the district has suffered relatively few demolitions, though its character was affected by the mid-twentieth-century construction of Interstate 91 to its east and south.
