Designed by German-born architect Henrik Schmahl, this ornate cinema in Budapest's District VIII opened in 1896 as a music and dance hall before the Uránia Society leased and renamed it as the Uránia Hungarian Scientific Theatre in 1899. The building's striking façade blends Venetian Gothic and Oriental elements, while its interior showcases lavish Moorish decoration. Originally featuring apartments on its upper floors, it underwent renovation in 1929 to become a dedicated cinema, hosting early films including *The Dance* in 1901. After closing in 1999 due to financial difficulties, the theater was restored and reopened with two new basement screening rooms added. Now situated on the Rákóczi roadway and a registered national monument, the Uránia continues to serve as a cultural venue, having recently hosted a Chinese Film Festival in 2017 and screenings celebrating Hungarian animation.
