Located in the Haynies Corner Arts District of Evansville, Indiana, the Alhambra Theatorium is a Moorish Revival movie theater designed by Frank J. Schlotter and opened on September 27, 1913. Built at a cost of $18,000, it was among the largest movie theaters in the city at its opening and one of many theaters worldwide inspired by the Alhambra Palace in Spain—though only a traditional playhouse in New York, completed in 1905, predates it in the United States. The theater originally included a cigar shop and confectionery, amenities that helped spark commercial development in the surrounding district. Operations ceased in 1956, but the building has undergone multiple renovations over subsequent decades and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
