The Victoria Memorial is a massive marble monument built between 1906 and 1921 in the Maidan, Central Kolkata, dedicated to Queen Victoria, Empress of India from 1876 to 1901. Designed by British architect William Emerson and constructed from Makrana marble by the firm Martin & Co., it stands as the largest monument to a monarch anywhere in the world. Showcasing prominent features of Indo-Saracenic architecture, the memorial occupies 26 hectares of gardens and now functions as a museum under India's Ministry of Culture. Its entrance fronts Queen's Way, and it has become one of Kolkata's most popular attractions.
