Located at 401 Poplar Street in Vienna, Illinois, the Vienna Public Library is a neoclassical brick Carnegie library constructed in 1911 with a $5,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation. Designed by local architect Thomas Clymer, the building features a prominent tall flight of stairs ascending to its front entrance, flanked by two pilasters. It provided a permanent home for Vienna's library program, which had been established in 1895 and operated from various temporary locations until the building's completion. Beyond its primary function, the structure has served multiple community purposes: the American Red Cross headquartered its operations there during a 1917 influenza outbreak, and a trachoma clinic operated in the basement from 1936 to 1964. The building has also functioned as a gymnasium, municipal office, and meeting space for civic organizations including the Johnson County Historical Society. Added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 24, 1995, it remains one of only two National Register-listed buildings in Johnson County.
