Located in Algiers, the Villa Abd-el-Tif is a Moorish villa established in 1907 as Algeria's counterpart to the French Academy's Villa Medici in Rome. Also known as la Villa Médicis algérienne, it housed laureates of the Abd-el-Tif prize, who received two-year bursaries to pursue their studies in the country. Unlike its Roman model, the villa had no permanent French director; resident artists themselves managed its operations as a condition of their awards. The villa functioned independently from the established École supérieure des beaux-arts d'Alger, which had provided local art instruction since 1843. Abandoned following Algeria's independence in 1962, the building was designated a historical monument in 1967, restored, and reopened in 2008 as the headquarters of the Agence algérienne pour le rayonnement culturel.
