Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, formerly the private villa of industrialist James Deering, sits on Biscayne Bay in Miami's Coconut Grove neighborhood. Completed in 1914, the estate was designed by architect F. Burrall Hoffman with associate architect Iwahiko Tsumanuma, design director Paul Chalfin, and landscape architect Diego Suarez. The mansion exemplifies Mediterranean Revival architecture infused with Baroque elements, drawing inspiration from Venetian and Tuscan Renaissance precedents. Beyond the house itself, the property encompasses extensive Italian Renaissance-style formal gardens, native woodland landscape, and a historic compound of village outbuildings. Now owned and operated by Miami-Dade County as a public museum and archives, Vizcaya is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and has been designated among America's Most Endangered Historic Places.
