The Volkstheater in Vienna's Neubau district was founded in 1889 at the request of prominent Viennese citizens, including dramatist Ludwig Anzengruber and furniture manufacturer Thonet, to provide popular theatrical fare as a counterweight to the imperial Hofburgtheater. Designed by Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, the building reconciles their architectural plans with historicism. The theatre was established to expose a broad swath of Vienna's population to both classical and modern literature alongside traditional plays, a mission it continues today with regular productions of the classics, reinterpretations of works by Ferdinand Raimund and Johann Nestroy, and new pieces emphasizing Austrian playwrights. The theatre was later expanded with an alternative stage called Volkstheater Hundsturm in the fifth district, dedicated to experimental theater. The main venue is also served by the Volkstheater station of Vienna's U2 and U3 subway lines.
