The Walter Merchant House stands on Washington Avenue in Albany, New York, as a mid-19th-century brick-and-stone townhouse blending Italianate and Renaissance Revival architectural styles. Once part of a dense residential streetscape, it has become a rare survivor in the city, distinguished by its intact rear carriage house—a feature few similar structures retain. Built during the era when Washington Avenue housed numerous comparable dwellings, the house now serves as one of the last originally residential buildings on its section of the thoroughfare, currently occupied by the offices of the New York chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
