The Westminster Arcade in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, erected in 1828, holds the distinction of being the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States. Located at the intersection of Westminster and Weybosset Streets, this landmark exemplifies commercial Greek Revival architecture and functioned as a shopping center for many decades before experiencing decline in the late twentieth century. Following several rounds of renovation and rehabilitation, the building reopened in October 2013 as a mixed-use residential and commercial space. Recognized for its architectural and historical significance, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
