Built in 1857 by William C. Shaft and his son William H. near Clements in Chase County, Kansas, this limestone house exemplifies Greek Revival and vernacular architecture adapted to the frontier. The original structure grew when five of William and Jane's sons added a two-story wing in 1868, inscribing Jane's name on the cornerstone—a testament to her determination to keep the family in Kansas after her husband's death. The resulting vernacular gable front and wing design reflects the pragmatic building practices of homes constructed in stages. As one of the earliest dwellings in the area, the Shaft House served multiple roles: family home, post office, and gathering place for pioneer settlers. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
