Built beginning in 1884 in San Jose, California, the Winchester Mystery House is a Victorian and Gothic-style mansion that was the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, widow of firearms magnate William Wirt Winchester. Constructed primarily of wood, the sprawling house became famous for its architectural curiosities and unusual design features. Following Sarah Winchester's death in 1922, the mansion opened as a tourist attraction nine months later and has remained one, drawing visitors intrigued by both its distinctive architecture and the numerous myths and legends that have accumulated around the structure and its former owner. Today it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a California Historical Landmark.
