St. Peter's Cathedral in Worms, Germany, is the most significant Romanesque monument in the city, constructed beginning in 1181 atop the highest point of the inner city. Serving as the seat of the Prince-Bishopric of Worms until the ecclesiastical territory's extinction in 1802, the cathedral is intimately tied to the city's flourishing in the 12th and 13th centuries under Bishop Burchard. While the main structure was completed by 1181, the 13th century brought the west choir and vaulting, the 14th century added an elaborate south portal, and the central dome has undergone reconstruction. Elevated to minor basilica status in 1925 by Pope Pius XI, the cathedral witnessed pivotal historical events including the Concordat of Worms (1122), which resolved the Investiture controversy, the marriage of Emperor Frederick II to Isabella of England (1235), and the Diet of Worms (1521), where Martin Luther faced condemnation as a heretic.
