Yad Vashem, Israel's official memorial to Holocaust victims, was established by the Knesset in 1953 and designed by architect Moshe Safdie. Located on the Mount of Remembrance in western Jerusalem, the sprawling 18-hectare complex integrates research and public commemoration through dual facilities: an International Research Institute, archives, library, and school for Holocaust studies alongside the Holocaust History Museum, the Children's Memorial, Hall of Remembrance, and the Museum of Holocaust Art. The site also honors the Righteous Among the Nations—non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the genocide—in the Garden of the Righteous and Avenue of the Righteous. Sculptures, outdoor commemorative spaces including the Valley of the Communities, and a synagogue complete the memorial, which serves as Israel's primary institution for documenting, researching, and educating about the Holocaust and genocide more broadly.
