The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints Stephen and Ladislav, located in Kaptol, Zagreb, stands as the tallest and most monumental sacral Gothic structure in Croatia. Originally completed in Romanesque style in 1217, the cathedral was devastated by the Tatar invasion of 1242 and subsequently rebuilt and expanded over centuries in Gothic form. Following severe damage from the 1880 Zagreb earthquake, architect Hermann Bollé undertook a comprehensive restoration, transforming the structure into the Neo-Gothic edifice seen today. The cathedral's defining features are its twin spires, each rising over 108 metres in height, making it among the world's tallest churches and the most recognizable landmarks visible throughout the city. Dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and to king-saints Stephen and Ladislaus, the cathedral remains one of Croatia's most important religious and cultural symbols, designated as a Cultural Heritage property in 2013.
