Zelve is a Byzantine-era monastic complex carved directly into rock formations in the Cappadocia region of Nevşehir, Turkey, between the towns of Ürgüp and Avanos. Established in pre-iconoclastic times, the monastery exemplifies the rock-cut architectural tradition characteristic of Byzantine Anatolia. Today it functions as an open-air museum, preserving the carved chambers, chapels, and living quarters that were fashioned from the region's distinctive tufa stone.
