Alahan Monastery (Koja Kalessi in Turkish) is a fifth-century Byzantine complex set high in the Isaurian mountains of southern Asia Minor, in present-day Mersin province, Turkey. Perched at 4,000 feet elevation and rising 3,000 feet above the Calycadnus valley, the site stands roughly an hour's walk from the village of Geçimli. While traditionally termed a monastery, recent scholarship contests this designation, suggesting instead that it functioned as a pilgrimage shrine. The complex holds considerable significance in the development of early Byzantine architecture, and knowledge of its structures derives almost entirely from excavations by Michael Gough. It is now recognized as a tentative World Heritage Site and serves as both an archaeological site and museum.
