Kızlar Monastery, a Byzantine female monastic complex in Trabzon, Turkey, was founded during the reign of Alexios III (1349–1390) of the Empire of Trebizond. Built on two terraces at the foot of Boztepe mountain with a protective high wall, the monastery originally consisted of a rock church on its south side, a chapel at its entrance, and several cells. The rock church interior preserves inscriptions and portraits of Alexios III, his wife Theodora, and his mother Irene. Though it underwent major repairs over the centuries, the complex assumed much of its present form during the 19th century.
