Zion Church in Tharangambadi, a former Danish settlement in Tamil Nadu's Mayiladuthurai district, is believed to be the first Protestant church in India. Built in 1717 by Rev. Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg—regarded as India's first Protestant missionary—the Gothic structure stands within the premises of Fort Dansborg, which was established through an agreement between Danish King Christian IV and Admiral Ove Gjedde. The church maintains records from the 18th and 19th centuries and continues to serve as a working place of worship under the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church, with daily services and hourly prayers. It remains one of Tharangambadi's most prominent landmarks.
