Completed in 1992 in Montreal's Ville-Marie district, 1000 de la Gauchetière is a 205-meter postmodern skyscraper designed by Dimitri Dimakopoulos. Clad in granite, concrete, glass, steel, and copper, the 51-story tower stands as Montreal's tallest building under the city's official height measurement, which excludes spires. The structure reaches the maximum elevation approved by municipal authorities—the elevation of Mount Royal—at 232.5 meters above mean sea level. A defining architectural feature is its dramatic atrium, which houses a large public ice skating rink, making the building notable not merely for its vertical prominence but as an active civic gathering space.
