Place Ville Marie is a major office and shopping complex in downtown Montreal comprising four office buildings and an underground shopping plaza. The main tower, 1 Place Ville Marie, rises 188 meters across 47 storeys in a cruciform plan, designed by Henry N. Cobb and I. M. Pei in the International style and completed in 1962 as headquarters for the Royal Bank of Canada. Clad in limestone, glass, steel, and aluminium, it remains the bank's head office today. The complex forms a central hub of Montreal's Underground City (RÉSO), providing indoor connections to over 1,600 businesses, multiple subway stations, and a suburban transportation terminal. A distinctive counter-clockwise rotating beacon crowns the rooftop, emitting four white horizontal beams visible up to 50 kilometres away at night.
