In Roppongi, Tokyo, 21 21 Design Sight opened in 2007 as a collaborative design museum created by architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake. Rather than a conventional exhibition space, Ando conceived the building as a place for researching design's potential to enrich daily life and to foster public engagement with different perspectives on the world and objects around us. The split-level concrete structure, occupying 1,700 square meters on the edge of a park, features two galleries, expansive 14-meter glass panels, and a hand-sanded steel roof inspired by Miyake's A-POC ("A Piece of Cloth") concept. An attached café, operated by chef Takamasa Uetake, completes the facility. Following Miyake's death, the museum is now directed by designers Taku Satoh and Naoto Fukasawa, with Noriko Kawakami as associate director.
