Completed in 2009, 41 Cooper Square is a nine-story academic center designed by architect Thom Mayne of Morphosis to house Cooper Union's Albert Nerken School of Engineering alongside facilities for the humanities, art, and architecture departments. The 175,000-square-foot building occupies the site of Cooper Union's former School of Art building and features ground-level exhibition space, an auditorium for public programming, and retail areas. Its construction, which began in 2006, proved controversial within the surrounding East Village neighborhood.
