Aberystwyth Castle is a Grade I listed Edwardian fortress built in 1277 in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, Mid Wales, constructed in response to the First Welsh War and replacing an earlier fortress located a mile to the south. During Owain Glyndŵr's national uprising, Welsh forces captured the castle in 1404, though the English reclaimed it four years later. From 1637 the castle housed a Royal mint under Charles I, which struck coins from locally mined silver. Oliver Cromwell slighted the fortress in 1649. Now a scheduled monument and National Monument of Wales, the castle stands as an important archaeological site documenting medieval military and economic history.
