Dinas Emrys, a rocky, wooded hillock near Beddgelert in Gwynedd, north-west Wales, rises approximately 76 metres above the Glaslyn river valley and overlooks the southern end of Llyn Dinas in Snowdonia. Originally an Iron Age hillfort, it was later developed as a castle, possibly erected by Llewelyn the Last to guard the mountain pass approach to Snowdon. Today, little survives of its medieval structures beyond stone ramparts and the base of a keep, though the site remains a scheduled monument and a National Monument of Wales.
