Agnews Developmental Center was a California state institution with campuses in Santa Clara and San Jose, founded in 1885 as a psychiatric facility. Designed in Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival architectural styles, the complex is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally serving people with mental illness, the facility's mission gradually shifted to focus on developmental disabilities after psychiatric programs were discontinued in 1972 as part of broader deinstitutionalization efforts. The institution operated for over a century, closing in phases between 1998 and 2011.
