Arakelots Monastery, set 11 kilometers southeast of Muş in eastern Turkey's historic province of Taron, was an Armenian monastic complex traditionally said to have been founded by Gregory the Illuminator to preserve relics of the apostles, though it was most likely built in the eleventh century. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, it flourished as a major center of learning and underwent multiple cycles of expansion, destruction, and renovation across subsequent centuries. The monastery remained a prominent religious site in Western Armenia until 1915, when it was attacked during the Armenian genocide and subsequently abandoned. The structure stood until the 1960s, when it was reportedly demolished, though substantial ruins of the Armenian architectural complex remain visible today.
