Belvedere House and Gardens stands approximately 8 kilometres northeast of Mullingar, County Westmeath, on the shore of Lough Ennell. Built in 1740 by Richard Cassels, one of Ireland's foremost Palladian architects, the house was commissioned as a hunting lodge for Robert Rochfort, 1st Earl of Belvedere. When Rochfort made it his principal residence, he engaged French stuccatore Barthelemij Cramillion to execute Rococo plasterwork ceilings. The house is distinguished by its Diocletian windows and nineteenth-century terracing. The surrounding demesne features the Jealous Wall—the country's largest folly and spite wall, built by Rochfort to obstruct the view of his estranged brother's nearby house—along with a Victorian walled garden and extensive forestry. Now fully restored, the house and grounds draw approximately 160,000 visitors annually.
