Located near Shahr-e Ray, a southern suburb of Tehran, the Bibi Shahrbanu Shrine is an Islamic mausoleum and one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam, venerated as the tomb of Shahrbanu, wife of the third Imam Hussein ibn Ali and mother of the fourth Imam Ali al-Sajjad. The shrine's oldest sections date from the fifteenth century, shortly before the Safavid era, and the complex exhibits architectural layers spanning Buyid, Safavid, and Qajar periods, constructed in tile, brick, stone, and mortar. Scholars have speculated whether the shrine's name and location may indicate continuity with an earlier pre-Islamic sanctuary, possibly dedicated to the Zoroastrian goddess Anahita. Designated as an Iranian National Heritage site in 1933, the shrine remains an important pilgrimage destination and cultural monument.
