The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, is a Châteauesque-style mansion completed in 1895 for George Washington Vanderbilt II, designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt with landscaping by Frederick Law Olmsted. Spanning 178,926 square feet, it remains the largest privately owned house in the United States and stands as one of the most prominent examples of Gilded Age architecture. Still owned by Vanderbilt descendants, the estate functions as a historic house museum and major tourist attraction, recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a National Register of Historic Places district.
