The Canton Tower, formally Guangzhou TV Astronomical and Sightseeing Tower, is a 600-metre-tall multipurpose observation tower completed in Guangzhou, China, and opened to the public on 29 September 2010 in time for the Asian Games. Designed by Information Based Architecture in high-tech style, the tower features a distinctive hyperboloid structure. Upon completion, it briefly held the title of world's tallest tower before being surpassed by Tokyo's Skytree, and remained China's tallest structure until the Shanghai Tower's topping out in 2013. It now ranks as China's second-tallest tower and the fifth-tallest freestanding structure globally.
