Completed in 2014 and designed by Gensler, the Shanghai Tower is a 128-story, 632-meter megatall skyscraper in Lujiazui, Pudong, that stands as China's tallest building and the world's third-highest by architectural height. This postmodern structure, owned by the Shanghai Municipal Government, rises as the tallest of three triple-adjacent supertall buildings in Pudong alongside the Jin Mao Tower and Shanghai World Financial Center. Its tiered design organizes nine separate zones across office, retail, and leisure uses, prioritizing energy efficiency and sustainability—credentials recognized by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat as among the world's most advanced. The tower held the world's fastest elevators at 20.5 meters per second and houses observation decks on the 118th, 119th, and 121st floors, the last of which at 562 meters became the world's highest observation deck when it opened by 2020. Construction began in November 2008, with the building opening to public use in February 2015, followed by phased openings of visitor facilities through 2018.
