The Cape Florida Light, constructed in 1825 on Cape Florida at the southern tip of Key Biscayne in Miami-Dade County, originally guided ships away from the treacherous Florida Reef. Staffed continuously until 1878, when the Fowey Rocks lighthouse assumed its duties, the structure was reactivated in 1978 by the U.S. Coast Guard to mark the Florida Channel, the deepest natural passage into Biscayne Bay, though it was decommissioned again in 1990. Part of the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park since 1966, the lighthouse was relit in 1996 and is now owned and operated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains a significant landmark of nineteenth-century American maritime infrastructure.
