Founded in 1917, the Caracas Museum of Fine Arts is an art museum in Caracas's Libertador Municipality that has occupied several homes throughout its history, beginning in the Palacio de las Academias before relocating to its current complex. Both of the museum's distinctive buildings were designed by architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva: a 1930s Neoclassical structure and a 1970s Brutalist structure that together represent different architectural approaches to museum design across the twentieth century. In the 1970s, the museum vacated its Neoclassical building to house the newly established National Art Gallery, but reclaimed that space in 2009 after the National Art Gallery moved into a dedicated new building. Designated a national historical monument of Venezuela, the museum's dual architectural identity reflects both Neoclassical refinement and Brutalist monumentality.
