Casa da Música is a concert hall in Porto, Portugal, designed by Rem Koolhaas and Ellen van Loon of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Inaugurated on 15 April 2005 at the site of a former tram terminus on the Rotunda da Boavista, the deconstructivist concrete structure was conceived as the first building in Portugal dedicated exclusively to music—serving both public performances and artistic training and creation. The project emerged from an international architecture competition won in 1999, with construction beginning that same year. The hall was designed to commemorate Porto's designation as European Capital of Culture in 2001.
