The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco's Cathedral Hill neighborhood is the principal church of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the third cathedral to bear this name in the city. Completed in 1970 through the collaborative design of architect Pietro Belluschi and structural engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, it embodies modern architecture. The cathedral replaced its predecessor, a structure built in 1891 that was destroyed by fire in 1962, continuing a lineage that traces back to the first Saint Mary's Cathedral, established in 1854.
