Citi Field is a baseball stadium in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens, New York City, designed by Populous and opened in 2009 as the home of Major League Baseball's New York Mets. Built at a cost of $850 million—with $615 million in public subsidies funded through municipal bonds that the Mets will repay with interest, offsetting property taxes for the park's lifetime—Citi Field replaced the adjacent Shea Stadium. The first game was played on March 29, 2009, a college matchup between St. John's and Georgetown, followed by two charity exhibition games against the Boston Red Sox before the Mets' first regular-season home game on April 13, 2009, against the San Diego Padres. The ballpark hosted the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, the second time the Mets have hosted the event. Citigroup purchased the naming rights for $20 million annually.
