Rate Field, home of the Chicago White Sox on the South Side of Chicago, is a baseball stadium designed by Populous and completed in 1991 at a cost of $137 million. Built in the Armour Square neighborhood just west of the Dan Ryan Expressway, the stadium was constructed across 35th Street from the original Comiskey Park, which had served the team since 1910 and was subsequently demolished. A marble plaque on the adjacent sidewalk marks the location of the old ballpark's home plate, with foul lines painted in the parking lot that replaced it. The stadium's east-northeasterly spectator ramp was designed to echo the contour of the original first-base grandstand, creating a physical connection between the new facility and its historic predecessor. The park is owned by the state of Illinois through the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority and has operated under several corporate naming rights throughout its history.
