Columbia Center, a 76-story glass skyscraper in downtown Seattle completed in 1985, was designed by Chester L. Lindsey Architects and developed by Martin Selig. Rising 933 feet (284 meters), it held the distinction of being the tallest structure on the West Coast upon completion; it remains Washington State's highest building. The tower combines class-A office space with retail on its lower floors and a public observatory on its upper reaches—the highest public viewing area west of the Mississippi River. The building occupies a full block bounded by Fourth and Fifth Avenues and Cherry and Columbia Streets.
