Built in 1879 in Alameda, California, the Croll Building is a Renaissance Revival structure that gained fame as the site of Croll's Gardens and Hotel, serving as a training headquarters for boxing champions from 1883 to 1914. James J. Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons, Jim Jefferies, Jack Johnson, and numerous other pugilistic greats prepared for their bouts within its walls during the height of the sport's golden age. Today, the ground floor houses 1400 Bar & Grill, where original details—including stained glass, elaborately etched windows, and a carved wooden bar—preserve the building's character from when Neptune Beach was a thriving regional attraction. The upper floors contain a residential hotel and office space. Located at the corner of Webster Street and Central Avenue and marked by a vintage neon sign, the building is recognized as both a California Historical Landmark and a place listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
