Eggenberg Palace in Graz is the most significant Baroque palace complex in Styria, Austria, designed by Giovanni Pietro de Pomis and built beginning in 1635. Situated at the western edge of the city at an elevation of 381 meters, the walled palace complex features a monumental west-facing portal and bears the architectural imprint of centuries under the patronage of the House of Eggenberg, once Styria's mightiest dynasty. Today the palace and its surrounding grounds function as part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, housing multiple collections including a numismatic collection in the former rooms of Balthasar Eggenberger (a Late Medieval imperial minting license holder), the Alte Galerie with paintings and sculptures spanning five centuries of European art from the medieval period through the early modern era, and an Archeology Museum featuring the Cult Wagon of Strettweg. The extensive grounds include the Planetary Garden and a Lapidarium of Roman stonework. Recognized in 2010 as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for Graz Historic Old Town, Eggenberg Palace ranks among Austria's most valuable cultural treasures.
