Essen City Hall is a 106-meter, 23-storey International Style skyscraper completed on July 1, 1979, designed by architect Theodor Josef Seifert. Upon completion, it ranked among Europe's tallest city halls and remains Germany's third tallest, after Leipzig's New Town Hall and Hamburg City Hall. The building features a distinctive Y-shaped floor plan and accommodates approximately 1,900 workplaces across 69,000 square meters of office space, along with a parliamentary area, an underground parking garage with over 700 spaces, and a theater that opened in 1991. A visitor area on the 22nd floor provides panoramic views over Essen and the surrounding Ruhr region. The construction required 60,000 cubic meters of concrete and 6,500 tons of structural steel, among other substantial materials. The entrance gallery displays sandstone sculptures of Saints Cosmas and Damian, the city's patron saints, relocated from the original town hall and created by sculptor Heinrich Kröger.
