F.D. Roosevelt State Park, a 9,049-acre Georgia state park near Pine Mountain and Warm Springs, was developed beginning in 1934 in the National Park Service rustic and American Craftsman styles. Named for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who sought treatment for his paralytic illness at the nearby Little White House in Warm Springs, the park encompasses the former Pine Mountain State Park, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1997. Several structures within the park were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, including a stone swimming pool and facilities at Dowdell's Knob, Roosevelt's favorite picnic spot overlooking the valley, where the president hosted polio patients and others for therapeutic outings. As Georgia's largest state park, it represents both Depression-era public works and Roosevelt's personal connection to the Warm Springs region.
