Opened on 11 June 1929, the Fairmont Royal York is a landmark luxury hotel designed by Ross and Macdonald in association with Sproatt and Rolph and built by the Canadian Pacific Railway. Located on Front Street West at the southern end of Toronto's Financial District, this 124-metre, 28-storey Châteauesque building was briefly the tallest structure in Toronto, the country, and the British Empire before the Canadian Bank of Commerce Tower was completed nearby the following year. One of Canada's grand railway hotels, the Royal York has undergone several extensive renovations since opening, beginning with a major overhaul in 1972. The building now connects to Toronto's underground PATH system via a walkway linking it to Royal Bank Plaza and Union Station.
