The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, located in the spa town of Baden-Baden, Germany, is the country's largest opera and concert house, with a 2,500-seat capacity. Designed by Viennese architect Wilhelm Holzbauer, it opened on 18 April 1998 within a building that had originally served as Baden-Baden's central railway station from 1904 until the branch line's closure in 1977. Holzbauer's new construction was architecturally integrated with the historic railway structure and incorporates the box office, the restaurant Aida, and Toccarion, a children's music space sponsored by the Sigmund Kiener Foundation. Following initial public startup funding, the Festspielhaus became the first privately financed European opera and concert company. Between 2003 and 2015, its cultural foundation presented the annual Herbert von Karajan Music Prize.
