Fort Wadsworth Light is a 1903 lighthouse built atop Battery Weed on Staten Island, overlooking the Narrows at the entrance to New York Harbor. Standing 4.6 meters tall, the light once projected visibility for 14 nautical miles and may have received its lantern from Fort Tompkins Light in the same year it was built. The opening of the Verrazzano–Narrows Bridge in 1965 rendered the lighthouse obsolete, and it remained dark for decades until volunteers restored it and converted it to solar power in 2005. The structure became part of Gateway National Recreation Area when Fort Wadsworth transferred from Navy to National Park Service control in March 1995.
