The Great Mosque of Herat, a major Sunni Friday mosque in northwestern Afghanistan, originated in 1200 CE when Sultan Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad Ghori of the Ghurids laid its foundation. Though the fundamental Ghurid structure has been preserved, successive rulers—including the Kartids, Timurids, Mughals, and Uzbeks—extended and modified the building over centuries. The mosque received its present appearance during the twentieth century. Built with lapis lazuli among its materials, the Friday Mosque remains the primary congregational mosque in Herat, serving the community for prayer and sermons, though it was not always the city's largest such structure.
