The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot stainless steel monument in St. Louis, Missouri, designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and completed in 1965. Built in the form of a weighted catenary arch, it stands as the world's tallest arch and Missouri's tallest accessible structure. Dedicated to westward expansion and "the American people," the Arch was constructed at a cost of $13 million and opened to the public on June 10, 1967. Located at the 1764 site of St. Louis's founding on the west bank of the Mississippi River, it has become an internationally recognized symbol of the city and a popular tourist destination. Listed as a National Historic Landmark within Gateway Arch National Park, the monument embodies high-tech architecture principles and remains subject to a local height restriction that prevents any building in the St. Louis area from exceeding its elevation.
