On the Syracuse University campus in Syracuse, New York, the Gateway was completed in 1911 as a Beaux-Arts structure designed by architect Earl Hallenbeck. Serving simultaneously as a gate, esplanade, memorial, and pathway, it exemplifies the grand compositional ideals of the Beaux-Arts movement popular in American institutional architecture of the early twentieth century.
